Gunmen Attack Ngige’s Convoy in Anambra, One Dead and Others Injured

News Image

Gunmen dressed in what looked like police and military uniforms attacked the convoy of former Anambra governor Chris Ngige on the Nkpor to Nnobi Road on Wednesday, leaving one woman dead and several people injured. The attack came without warning and caused panic along the busy road. Witnesses said the attackers opened fire on the pilot vehicle. A police officer in that car was shot and had his rifle and uniform taken. He went into surgery soon after and doctors say he is responding well. The vehicle was left badly damaged by bullets. A woman who stepped out to record the scene with her phone was shot and died where she stood. A shop owner nearby, who came out on hearing the noise, was also hit. He lost a great deal of blood and was rushed to hospital, where doctors removed metal fragments from his body. He is now stable. Chris Ngige did not travel with the convoy at the time. His former media aide, Fred Chukwuelobe, said, “Dr Ngige confirmed the attack and has insisted that those injured must receive the medical care they need.” He added that Ngige sent his “deep sympathy to the family of the woman who lost her life.” People along the road described the incident as sudden and frightening. One resident said, “They looked like security men. You would not know anything was wrong until the shooting started.” The police in Anambra have not released a full statement, but officers say a search for the attackers is going on across the state. Their motive remains unknown, leaving many in the area uneasy as they wait for answers.
