Defence Minister Badaru Resigns, Tinubu Sets Process in Motion for Replacement
The Federal Government has confirmed the resignation of Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, who stepped down citing health reasons in a letter dated 1 December. The Presidency announced that President Bola Tinubu has accepted the resignation and thanked the former minister for his service. Badaru, a former governor of Jigawa State, had overseen the Defence Ministry during a period of rising insecurity, with renewed concerns over insurgency, banditry and organised criminal attacks in several regions. His departure comes at a time when security agencies are under pressure to demonstrate stronger coordination and results. Shortly after the announcement, attention shifted to possible successors. Former Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, was seen at the Presidential Villa earlier in the day, leading to speculation that he may be under consideration. The Presidency has indicated that a formal nomination will be sent to the Senate within days. The resignation has created a notable gap in the security leadership structure, and all eyes are now on the President as the country awaits the appointment of a new defence minister to guide ongoing military operations.
