The Anambra State chapter of Labour Party (LP), has held a factional primary election to elect the governorship candidate of the party for the November 8, 2025 governorship election. This is coming after last week’s primary election of the party where another candidate, Dr George Moghalu had been elected. An aspirant of the party, Mr John Nwosu has pulled out of the previous election, citing irregularities and incompetence on the part of the Julius Abure-led party to hold the election, having been sacked by the Supreme Court. In Thursday’s primary election, John Nwosu stood for the election against Hon Jude Umejiego and lost. While Umejiego polled 180 votes to floor Nwosu who polled 69 votes. Acting chairman of the electoral committee, Amb. Sunday Okereke while declaring the results said: “With the powers conferred on me by the electoral act 2022, and the guidelines of our party, I hereby declare and return Hon Jude Umejiego as the duly elected candidate of Labour Party for the November 8, 2025.” Meanwhile, former Anambra State governorship aspirant of All Progressives Congress (APC), Sir Paul Chukwuma, has emerged as the candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP). This is coming as another party, Action Alliance (AA) elected Mr Jeff Nweke as their candidate. Chukwuma who was a leading aspirant of the ruling APC had withdrawn from the primary election, citing irregularities in the conduct of the electoral process. He subsequently joined the YPP, where he emerged victorious in the party’s primary election, winning unopposed. In a primary election conducted at the state secretariat of the party in Awka on Thursday, Chukwuma was announced winner by the Chairman of the Election Committee and National Secretary of YPP, Bar Vidieno Bamaiyi. Bamaiyi told journalists that: “We had only one aspirant, Sir Paul Chukwuma, and we still went ahead with a vote in line with the constitution and guidelines of the party,” he stated. In his acceptance speech, Sir Paul Chukwuma expressed his gratitude to the party and its members, emphasising that the YPP is a party founded on discipline. He said: “Our target is the Government House in Awka. With your support and the grace of God, we will get there. “I am in YPP to ensure that Anambra State is represented at the center of government. It is at the center where we will secure the opportunities that will uplift our dear state,” he affirmed In Action Alliance (AA), the party elected Chief Jeff Nweke, as candidate of the party for the 2025 governorship election. Nweke was elected after he secured 58 votes in an open ballot election. The security expert was elected above two other aspirants who sought the ticket of the party. The aspirants included Mr. Micheal and Mrs Amarachukwkwu Obioha who secured six and eight votes respectively. Chairman of the party’s electoral committee, Mr Vernimbe James who presided over the election said: “With the powers conferred on me as the chairman of the electoral committee, I hereby pronounce Chief Jeff Nweke the candidate of the party for the November 8, 2025 governorship election.” Reacting to his victory, Nweke said as the AA governorship candidate, he will prioritise security and job creation in Anambra State. He attributed the high insecurity in the state to high youth unemployment and proposed massive employment initiatives to engage youths positively and reduce crime. Nweke’s leadership and commitment to community development have earned him recognition. He said: “We are poised for victory. We cannot leave Anambra to state to some people who do not have her well-being at heart. We need those that will take the bull by the horn.”
