Mid-Term Report: Tinubu Has been Vindicated, Say APC Governors

About 20 Governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) met behind closed-door in Abuja to reassess the performance of the government as it approaches its mid-term, saying President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been vindicated. Among those in attendance at the meeting were Governors Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Mohammed Nasir Idris (Kebbi), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Monday Okpebholo (Edo), Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta), Hyacinth Alia (Benue) and Usman Ododo (Kogi). The meeting was also attended by the National Chairman of the APC, Abdullahi Ganduje; the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN); the Ministers of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo (SAN); and Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris. Briefing journalists after the meeting, the chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum and Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodinma, said despite the criticism of the opposition, President Tinubu has been vindicated by the international community because of his positive reforms in Nigeria. He said, “Well, you will agree with me that what we practice here is a partisan democracy. That is democracy where all elections must be through political party sponsorship. In this case, the government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is a government produced by all Progressive Governors. So, everybody you have seen here today came as a member of APC, irrespective of the political office he or she occupies. “So we are here to put heads together to congratulate ourselves and congratulate Nigeria on the recent developments. You know at the beginning of this administration, when the President started with the reforms, the opposition was very loud in criticising the policies of the government. “But today, Mr. President is being vindicated. Gradually, international organisations like World Bank, and IMF, are now beginning to commend the administration of President Bola for taking bold decisions on embarking on a reform-driven government. “At the same time, we are here to also see how best to coordinate and encourage the members of our great party and, by extension, Nigeria. Despite all distractions, we are resilient in supporting the government of Tinubu and putting heads together on how best to serve Nigeria better as a political party. “So we have a responsibility as a party to provide support for the administration of this courageous and bold man who has come to serve Nigeria. Our meeting went well. We put our heads together, we discuss, and we agree, going forward, working as a family, we must struggle to serve Nigeria better.” Asked if discussions were also about the Supreme Court judgement which gave autonomy to the Local Governments, Uzodinma said APC is a rule-driven political organisation. “If there is any decision of the Supreme Court against our party, we will obey. If in favour of our party, we will also obey. We will not go against the judgment”, he said. He also spoke on the May 29 anniversary of Tinubu’s administration. According to him, the APC is very ready to celebrate the successes recorded so far and also address the challenges also recorded. “So any moment from now, National Working Committee (NEC) of the APC will roll out the programs and events and we will all participate”, Uzodinma said. The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said the meeting ended well. He said, “We’ve come together to reassess the performance of the government as it approaches its midterm. We feel happy to say that the government of APC has done so well. We have a lot to showcase. And we have all agreed that leading up to the mid-point of this administration, we will enlighten Nigerians more about what government is doing. “We will also take feedback from Nigerians so that we can do even better. The APC family is a very big one. And it is not out of place for all of us to come together once again to look at what we have done in the last two years and project also where we are going in the future. “The entire hope is that Nigeria reaches the desired prosperity that Mr. President has promised when he took office. We are happy with where we are going. We know that there have been some challenges here and there, but we also know that we are in the right direction and God’s willing, Nigeria will get on for it.”
