Nigeria Police Arrest Turkish Fugitive in Abuja and Repatriate Him to Face Long Fraud Sentence
The Nigeria Police Force has handed over a sixty one year old Turkish national, Acar Huseyin, to authorities in Istanbul after months of quiet tracking that began shortly after he slipped out of his country to avoid a long fraud sentence. According to details contained in a report released by CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Force Public Relations Officer, Huseyin was convicted earlier in the year by the Istanbul Anadolu High Criminal Court but fled before he could begin serving a sentence of fourteen years, eight months and ten days. He is believed to have moved through parts of the Middle East before arriving in Nigeria. The development drew the attention of INTERPOL, and by July 2025 a Red Notice had been circulated from Ankara, urging member states to locate and detain the fugitive. The notice prompted coordinated intelligence work by INTERPOL National Central Bureau Abuja, which eventually traced Huseyin to the Federal Capital Territory, where he was arrested without fanfare. After completing the required international procedures, Nigerian authorities transferred him back to Turkey to commence his prison term. The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, commended the officers involved, noting that the country would not become a shelter for fugitives and that Nigeria remains committed to fulfilling its international policing obligations. The case has drawn attention inside law enforcement circles for the speed with which international partners moved, a reminder of how borders can narrow quickly when information is shared.
