Twenty Four Abducted Kebbi Schoolgirls Regain Freedom After Security Operation
All twenty four schoolgirls abducted from the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State, have regained their freedom after more than a week in captivity. News of their release filtered into Abuja on Tuesday, confirmed by the Presidency and senior security sources who had monitored the case since the night of the abduction. The attack took place on 17 November when armed men stormed the school grounds, killing the vice principal and injuring a security guard before forcing the students into the bush. Two of the pupils managed to escape as the group was being moved, but the remaining twenty four were taken deeper into the forests of Danko Wasagu. Officials described the recovery effort as a coordinated operation involving multiple security agencies, though they withheld details of the precise manoeuvres. The girls were immediately transported to Birnin Kebbi for medical checks and debriefing. Security personnel declined to say whether any suspects had been arrested. President Bola Tinubu welcomed the development, stating that “putting more boots on the ground is essential” to prevent further attacks on schools. He added that the safe return of the girls was treated “as a matter of utmost urgency”. Relief in Kebbi is tempered by concern, as the recurring pattern of school attacks continues to test the resilience of communities and the country’s security response.
