Pep Guardiola Confirms He Will Take Break From Football Management After Manchester City Tenure Ends

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has confirmed he will take a break from football management once his time at the club comes to an end, although he is yet to decide when that will be. The Spaniard, who signed a two-year contract extension in November 2022 keeping him at the Etihad until June 2027, has overseen a transformative and trophy-laden period in the club’s history. By the end of that contract, Guardiola would have been in charge for 11 years — longer than at any of his previous clubs, Barcelona and Bayern Munich. “After my contract with City, I’m going to stop. I’m sure,” Guardiola told ESPN. “I don’t know if I’m going to retire, but I’m going to take a break.” Clarifying his remarks in a follow-up interview with Sky Sports, Guardiola added: “I didn’t say I’m leaving now or at the end of the season or the end of the contract. I said when I finish my time here – be it one, two, three, four, five years – I will take a break.” Under his leadership, Manchester City have secured six Premier League titles in nine seasons, including a historic Treble in 2022-23, which featured the club’s first UEFA Champions League triumph. Despite not hitting the same heights this season, with City currently fourth in the Premier League and four games remaining, they remain in contention for silverware and will face Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final on 17 May. Reflecting on his legacy, Guardiola said: “How I want to be remembered, I don’t know. I want people to remember me however they want. I believe that the fans of Barcelona, Bayern Munich and City had fun watching my teams play.” He added: “When we die, our families cry for two or three days and then that’s it – you’re forgotten. The important thing is that the good coaches are remembered for longer.”
